Auxiliary LogoThe American Legion Auxiliary Department (State) of Florida sponsors Florida Girls State. Founded in 1919, the American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest patriotic women’s service organization, with a membership of nearly 850,000. Local American Legion Auxiliary Units have a strong presence in more than 9,500 communities nationwide. The American Legion Auxiliary’s mission to serve veterans, their families and their communities is carried out through its hundreds of outreach programs delivered by its members, volunteers and National Headquarters. Our Staff members are trained in accordance with the Florida Board of Health requirements by the staff at Florida State University. We have two registered nurses on our Florida Girls State Staff to assist our citizens during their week with any medical needs they may have. Additionally, we have 5 Female Florida Highway Patrol Officers who live and travel with the girls at all times throughout the session.

Florida State University has a fully operational University Police Department (UPD). The UPD consists of 26 FL Trooper-trained police officers who are visible and on call 24 hours a day to ensure our safety throughout our stay on campus.

A full "Two Plus Two" College Scholarship to attend two years at Tallahassee Community College followed by two years at Florida State University.

The staff of Florida Girls State consists of American Legion Auxiliary members who volunteer their time to insure the success of the program.
Our security is provided by female officers of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Packing Tips

Packing a suitcaseIt is important to pack lightly! For security purposes Parents are not allowed in the building and citizens will have to carry their own luggage (possibly up several flights of stairs).


Who is eligible to attend?

To be eligible to participate in the Florida Girls State Program, a girl must be:

  1. Academically in the upper third of her class.
  2. A member of the Junior class in Senior High School (including those who are Home Schooled) at the close of the current school year and planning to re-enter school for her Senior year.
  3. Recommended by the High School Principal or Superintendent, certifying the candidate possesses outstanding qualities of leadership, character, honesty, scholarship, cooperation and maturity. Final selection will be made after each candidate has been interviewed by the local American Legion Auxiliary Unit.
  4. Is fit – this program is strenuous physically, mentally and emotionally.
  5. Interested in the program and willing to participate in all phases of the program including flag ceremonies.
  6. Present for the entire session. No passes to leave the campus will be granted at any time during the session.
  7. Girls need not be members of the American Legion or the American Legion Auxiliary families.
  8. The Girls State Director reserves the right to accept or reject any application for citizenship in Florida Girls State. During the session, the Director may dismiss any girl for violation of the Girls State Code of Conduct. In such case, fees will not be refunded.
